Kin Ya Men?

September 27, 2011

I was once

on the internet

witness

to a fascinating

linguistic

phenomenon.

A lower class

Scottish fellow

used the phrase

“Kin ya men?”

to mean

“you know what I mean?”

this is incredibly

cool

because the verb

“Kennen”

in German

means, more or less

“to know”.

And it appears

to me

that a tiny fragment

of

“Kennen”

has lived

for over

a millenium

in

Scottish slang

while it means

nothing

to your average

English speaker.

It’s a little bit

of

German

hiding out

in a well-established

but not well-known

dialect

like

a small child

playing

hide-and-seek

and

I found that little fucker.

I absolutely love that. I love finding those little hidden bits of things that would go completely unnoticed by anyone who didn’t know what they were looking for. That is a fantastic feeling.
