West Oakland

September 28, 2011

I was walking

through

a neighborhood

somewhere

in

West Oakland.

I saw a number

of

disturbing

or otherwise

unusual

events.

The most alarming

in a negative

sense

were the used

needles

laying on the sidewalk

in various

places

and

the men

actually injecting

heroin

in the parks.

But the most

amusing

event

was as follows:

a small boy

about five years of age

was riding

his bicycle

in a driveway

with the training

wheels

on.

A man pulled

up

in his car

and shouted

from

the open window

“TAKE OFF YO TRAINING WHEELS, NIGGA!”

This surprised me

so much

that I almost burst into

laughter.

Fortunately

I didn’t.

But boy

oh boy

was that

interesting.
